When it comes to replacing your siding, the material you choose makes a big difference in how your home looks, how long it lasts, and how much maintenance you'll deal with down the road. We work with three main siding materials here in Central Minnesota: vinyl, steel, and LP. Each one has its place, and the right choice depends on your budget, your home, and what you're looking for long term.
Here's an honest breakdown of all three.
Vinyl Siding
Vinyl is the most affordable siding option we offer, and for a lot of homeowners it makes a lot of sense. If you have an older home that needs a facelift, vinyl does a great job of cleaning things up and making the house look fresh again without breaking the bank.
Where vinyl falls short is durability. It's a plastic product, and plastic has its limits in a Minnesota climate. On a cold winter day, vinyl gets brittle. A shovel leaning against the house, a kid throwing a ball, or even just bumping it the wrong way can crack a panel. Over time, typically in the 15 to 20 year range, vinyl starts to dry out and become even more fragile. Large hail will break it.
โVinyl is a solid choice if you want an affordable, good-looking product and understand what you're working with. It's not built to last forever, but it serves its purpose well at the right price point.
Steel Siding
Steel is a step up. It's a higher end product and one we've been installing since the early 1980s. When maintained properly, steel holds up well 30 years down the road and beyond. It's low maintenance, it keeps its shape, and it doesn't have the brittleness issues that vinyl runs into in cold weather.
Steel does have two things to be aware of. Over time you may see some fading, and large hail will dent it. It won't crack or break like vinyl, but it can take a dent. For most homeowners that's an acceptable tradeoff given how well steel performs in every other category.
We offer steel in seamless and box profile options, and it remains one of our most popular products for homeowners who want something built to last without jumping to a premium price point.
LP Siding
LP is our premium product and one of the most popular options in our market right now. If you're looking at LP, you're looking at the best of what we offer.
LP is a painted wood composite product, which means it gives your home a warmer, more traditional look than vinyl or steel. One of the things we hear most from homeowners is how much they like the way LP corners look on a house. It finishes cleanly and looks sharp.
From a durability standpoint, LP is your best option if hail is a concern. It holds up better against large hail than either vinyl or steel. It's also easily repaintable, so if you ever want to change your color or refresh the exterior down the road, you can do that without replacing the siding itself.
The one thing to know about LP is that it's a wood-based product, which means moisture management matters during installation. It needs to be kept off concrete and away from roof lines where water can pool or wick up into the panel. Installed correctly by an experienced crew, it performs beautifully for decades. Installed carelessly, moisture becomes a problem. This is one of those products where who installs it matters as much as the product itself.
So Which One Should You Choose?
Here's a simple way to think about it.
If budget is the main driver and you want a clean, updated look, vinyl gets the job done.
If you want something built to last with low maintenance and a reasonable price point, steel is a great middle ground.
If you want the best looking, longest lasting product and plan to be in your home for the long haul, LP is worth the investment.
At Lutgen Companies, we are happy to walk you through all three options during a free on-site consultation and help you figure out which one makes the most sense for your home and your budget.
